đź“… The Department of Artificial Intelligence was established on July 7, 1999 (Order No. 72, decision of the Academic Council from July 2, 1999, Order No. 14) based on the Department of Technical Cybernetics (TC) and the branch department of Artificial Intelligence and Information Systems (AIIS) under the leadership of Professor Vagan Terzyan.
đź“… The Department of TC was founded on September 14, 1964. Its first head was Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences Oleksandr Andriyovych Volkov. Under his leadership, a scientific school for training highly qualified specialists was created. The TC Department provided classical fundamental education in systems analysis, operations research, mathematical programming, and database theory for many university study programmes.
🔧 Modern computer technologies were introduced at the department thanks to Professors Vagan Terzyan, Yevgen Bodyanskyi, and their scientific schools.
🌍 As part of the collaboration with the University of Jyväskylä (Finland), initiated by Professor Terzyan, three international methodological seminars were held. It was at these seminars in Kharkiv that methods for the computer-based defense of term papers and theses were introduced for the first time.
🎓 In 1995, the study programme “Intelligent Decision Support System” (IDSS) was launched. The curricula for bachelor’s, specialist, and later master’s studies in IDSS were developed by the department in close collaboration with Finnish and global experts, with financial support of the Finnish Academy of Sciences. These curricula became an unique for the Ukrainian education system at that time.
🔍 The curriculum of the study programme “Intelligent Decision Support System” was presented to leading experts in the field of information systems and successfully passed the competitive selection for presentation at the UNESCO Congress (Monte Carlo, 1996). It was also discussed at the International Symposium on curriculum development in the field of computer science (United Kingdom, 1996).
📚 As the relevance of this study programme required the immediate launch of training specialists in Intelligent Decision Support System according to international standards, a branch department of Artificial Intelligence and Information Systems (AIIS) was established at KhTURE under the Department of Software Engineering. It functioned as part of the Finnish Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at the University of Jyväskylä under the leadership of Professor Terzyan. The branch department was tasked with providing three-cycle training for students in the study programme “Intelligent Decision Support System.”
🏫 In 1999, the AIIS branch department was merged with the TC department, forming the Department of Artificial Intelligence.
